The main focus was on the basic set-up of the new car to achieve maximum performance. "The Astra TCR worked reliably in the last tests at Zandvoort and Estoril, and the performance is right. Now we are fine-tuning the details before the first cars are then delivered to our customer teams at the end of February," said Jörg Schrott, Opel Motorsport Director.
Front axle the decisive component
For Dietmar Metrich, Technical Director of Opel Motorsport, and the team from Opel development partner Kissling Motorsport, the design of the front axle also played a special role. "This is a crucial component in a front-wheel-drive racing car with around 330 hp. All longitudinal and lateral forces in a TCR vehicle, i.e. acceleration in addition to braking and steering, act on the front wheels."
"It's not just about pure lap time, but also about tire wear. A car with a well-functioning front axle has a clear advantage in tough competition. And because the articulation points of the front suspension are free in the TCR regulations, you have a certain amount of leeway when designing the front axle," explained Metrich.
The Opel Astra TCR will be unveiled for the first time at this year's Geneva Motor Show (March 03-13, 2016).
