Volkswagen: ID.3 and ID.4 are now followed by ID.5 🎥
AND IT'S GOING ON Wolfsburg, pun intended, is not running out of IDs. After the ID.3 and ID.4, the ID.5 now follows as an electric SUV coupe in three performance levels and two drive variants.
The ID.5 GTX with all-wheel drive comes with rear-mounted engines at 220 kW (299 hp).
With the new model, which will roll into dealerships next year, Volkswagen is further expanding its electric range and coming closer to its promise to offer at least one e-mobile in the main segments by 2025. According to these plans, the last combustion engine will roll off the production lines between 2033 and 2035.
Good space for the backbenchers
In terms of design, the creative minds in Wolfsburg opted for a shape typical of the segment and created a flowing coupe silhouette that, despite its sloping rearward line, allows generous space even for the backseat passengers.
The result is a drag coefficient of 0.26, which has a positive effect on the range. Volkswagen promises up to 520 kilometers. Thanks to the wheelbase of 2.77 meters (with an exterior length of 4.60 meters), an interior has been created that achieves masses that conventional SUVs only reach in the next higher segment.
On two screens the most important data
In the interior, customers can expect high-quality materials that continue the idea of sustainable mobility. The front seats are equipped with armrests and the driver looks out onto a functional cockpit that provides information on the most important data on two screens.
The whole thing is not as sober and hard plastic as in the ID.3, and the material feel is also much better. The upholstery materials of the seats are vegan in all versions, i.e. free of animal products. Textile is standard, and the top version GTX (pictures in the gallery) comes with a combination of textile and imitation leather.
From zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds
The ID.5 is offered in two performance levels. The basic Pro version uses a 128 kW (174 hp) rear-mounted engine. In the ID.5 Performance, the engine produces 150 kW (204 hp), and in the top version ID.5 GTX with all-wheel drive, the two engines mounted at the front and rear produce a combined 220 kW (299 hp).
This is enough to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The top speed is reached at 180 km/h for all variants. The 77 kWh energy storage unit is located between the two axles in the vehicle floor.
Adapted software generation for the series
In addition to the new hardware, the VW developers also gave the series a completely new software generation, with which updates and additional functions can be installed "over the air".
The assistance systems can be bundled with swarm data at the touch of a button in Travel Assist, so that together with the ACC and Lane Assist systems, the navigation system and the Car-to-X swarm data, semi-automated driving should be possible. A head-up display, which among other things also shows the navigation's turn arrows, is available at extra cost.
When it comes to charging, the ID.5 comes with the now standard options. It takes half an hour to charge the car for the next 390 kilometers at a 135 kW fast charging station. For the ID.5 GTX, it's 320 kilometers.
Swiss prices have not yet been set for the new models.
... and what's next for Volkswagen?
Next year will see the launch of the ID Buzz electric bus, followed a year later by the ID.6, an electric car the size of a Passat. Another two years later will come the ID Life compact car, which was already on display at the IAA in September.
