The approximately 100-hectare site of the Weissach Development Center stands for cutting-edge technology, innovation and heart and soul. The center was put into operation in 1971. It includes the areas of design, motorsport, test benches and in-house test track.
Long tradition
The museum in Zuffenhausen is dedicating a look behind the scenes at the place of origin of all Porsche sports cars as part of the special exhibition. The center features a highlight exhibit where visitors can digitally experience various topics using augmented reality applications. Among other things, they can look back at the beginning and the development of the site over the past five decades.
The company owes the decisive tip for the development center site to Herbert Linge, an employee and racing driver at the time. In January 1960, Linge drew Porsche's attention to the site, which appeared to be worthless for agriculture. A test track was put into operation there as early as 1962, and the research and development center opened nine years later.
Digital and analog
To honor the individual departments of the Development Center, the exhibition is divided into several sections: First Steps, Test Bench and Wind Tunnel, Porsche Engineering, Design, Motorsport and Center.
The test rig area starts with the wind tunnel and a Taycan AR app. Guests will get an insight into everything that employees do on test stands.
In the center, visitors can use iPads and AR software to get to know the prominently positioned Weissach model. There are also shelves with exhibits, models and 3D prints. A few days before the exhibition begins, the summer vacation program for children as part of Porsche 4Kids is already starting.
