After a superb qualifying session, Fabienne Wohlwend started from second place on the grid for the third W Series race of the season at the Formula 1 in Silverstone. With a mega start, the Liechtensteiner, who competes with a Swiss license, was able to take the lead and maintain an advantage of around one second over her first pursuer.
Braking costs the lead
In the 18th minute, the safety car pulled out after a car stopped on the track. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of the end of the dreams of victory.
Fabienne Wohlwend: "After a good re-start, I noticed that my tires were weakening. After that, I struggled with the balance. A braking mistake in turn 16 unfortunately cost me the lead."
Only one victory missing
In the five remaining minutes of the race, she was unable to get it back. So Fabienne secured second place, which is her best result so far in the second season of the women's formula racing series.
After the podium at the season opener in Spielberg (3rd) and a disappointing tenth place the week before at the same venue, the 23-year-old moved back up to fourth intermediate place in the championship.
Victory in the third of eight races of the season and the lead in the standings went to Briton Alice Powell, as in Spielberg 1. Third place went to defending champion Jamie Chadwick.
When is the time?
In her joy, the only German speaker in the 18-strong field does not hide her quiet disappointment.
Fabienne Wohlwend: "It's hard to lose in this way, but I'm still happy. The season is far from over. My race speed is right and the first victory is only a matter of time. So I'm already looking forward to the next race in two weeks in Hungary."
