With the Chiron Super Sport 300+, Bugatti is redefining luxury super sports cars - yet again. After all, the first Super Sport, the Type 55, was created some 90 years ago.
The three later models EB 110 Super Sport, Veyron 16.4 Super Sport and Chiron Super Sport 300+ were and are also highlights of their eras.
Pilots Loris Bicocchi, Pierre-Henri Raphanel, and Andy Wallace played a key role in the success of these models. They recently met at Bugatti's headquarters in Molsheim and reminisced.
The quartet of super-fast bolides
The turbocharged 2.3-liter eight-cylinder in-line engine helped the Type 55 achieve unrivaled top speeds. Typical features were its horseshoe-shaped radiator grille, flowing fenders and low entrance.
According to Loris Bicocchi, the EB 110 Super Sport still rides perfectly today. Its extremely lightweight carbon monocoque weighs just 125 kilograms. It is powered by a V12 engine with four turbochargers that develops up to 610 hp, which is then distributed to all four wheels.
In June 2010, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport set a speed record for street-legal production sports cars at 431.072 km/h. Its newly developed eight-liter W16 engine produces 1001 hp. This enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds.
The Chiron Super Sport 300+ drives precisely and easily even at speeds above 400 km/h, according to driver Andy Wallace. The Englishman was the first driver to break the 300-mph mark. 304.773 mph equals 490.484. Simply tremendous.
High speed beyond 420 km/h
With the Chiron, Bugatti presented a completely newly developed hyper sports car in 2016. Its W16 engine produces 1500 hp and maximum torque is 1600 Nm. With 1600 hp, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ surpasses the Chiron once again, making it the most powerful Bugatti ever built.
Visually, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ differs mainly from the Chiron in having a lengthened and aerodynamically optimized body designed for extreme high speeds beyond 420 km/h.
The special edition Super Sport 300+, available in a quantity of 30, is made of deep black exposed carbon and two racing stripes in orange that run from the rear to the front across the entire body of the hypercar.
