Fiat: The 500e is the first to come to the cable 🎥
STROMER Now in its third generation, the eternally young Fiat 500 rolls along the roads exclusively electrically and has been subtly redesigned for its new appearance by the creative department in Turin. The 500e is particularly at home in the city. Tours on country roads also have their charm.
Although the city car has made gains in all areas and now stands much more confidently on its new 16-inch wheels than the version with a combustion engine (which is still on offer), it has fortunately retained its character.
More convenient access with the third door
In addition to the electric drive, those responsible also gave the model series a third variant alongside the convertible with a third door to make the rear seat more easily accessible. The first row in particular benefits from the more generous dimensions of the new platform developed for the 500e.
From the raised seating position, the driver can see the tidy circular instrument and the screen. It has been positioned where the rear-view mirror vibrated on the original 500.
The materials make a high-quality impression. This starts with the door handles and ends with the redesigned interior. The electric 500 also has additional storage compartments and stowage options.
Each equipped with a quick-charging function
For the dawn of the electric era, the small car is being launched with two drive versions. The basis is a 70 kW (95 PS) electric motor coupled with a 23.8 kWh battery, which means a manageable range of around 180 kilometers.
For contemporaries with a greater range, the Italians have developed a more powerful version with 87 kW (118 hp), which can take the little one a maximum of 320 kilometers thanks to a 42 kWh battery.
Both drives are equipped with a fast-charging function, so that the time spent at the charging station is significantly reduced and 80 percent of the battery capacity is reached in 35 minutes.
It takes up to 15 hours to charge from a household socket, and the wallbox with eleven kW charges in around four hours.
Top speed is 150 km/h
After the start, the 500e gets going quickly, accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in three seconds and thus showing the tail lights of many larger competitors at the traffic lights. Fiat claims a top speed of 150 km/h.
Three driving settings are available to the driver, with Normal corresponding to the driving style of the models with a combustion engine, although this ultimately has a negative effect on the range because energy recovery during deceleration is less pronounced.
Sherpa mode against range anxiety
The Range setting is more recommendable, in which the recuperation is much more pronounced and the 500e can practically be steered with a pedal. This takes some getting used to at first and the Fiat often stops well before the red light, but after a few kilometers even the inexperienced driver will quickly get to grips with this setting.
If range anxiety suddenly sets in because the nearest charging station is far away, the Sherpa setting can help. This optimizes the range by switching off power consumers such as the seat heating and limiting the maximum speed to 80 km/h.
Driving behavior as with combustion engines
The handling of the electric 500 has been adopted from its combustion engine counterparts. The chassis is designed with comfort in mind and reports bumps rather discreetly to the interior.
However, as with the classic 500, the steering is a touch too light and could be more precise. Obviously, the Fiat developers have not skimped on damping material, because the driving noise only becomes more noticeable above the 120 km/h mark.
Fiat promises a consumption of 14.9 kWh for 100 kilometers. After a first drive, including a few kilometers on the freeway, the consumption display showed 16.2 kWh.
Assistance systems from the modular system
In terms of assistance systems, the Fiat developers reached deep into the Group's drawers and equipped the 500e with traffic sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot assist and a reversing camera, among other things.
In addition, the 500e is the first representative of its class to be able to roll autonomously over the asphalt in accordance with Level 2. With adaptive cruise control switched on, the Fiat Co-Driver recognizes speed limits and stops if necessary. It also keeps the little car in the middle of the lane.
