Originally, nine events were planned for the championship for drivers with or without a racing license in Vorarlberg, which has been held since 1980. After the first three events were allowed to be held with a special protection concept, the mountain slaloms in Damüls and Eichenberg Corona had to be cancelled after all.
This left the mountain slaloms at Arlberg (July 10/11) and in Gargellen (August 22/23) as well as the slalom at Drivingcamp Röthis, which was postponed from Easter Saturday to July 26. This still resulted in five selective runs for the 2020 International Drytech Automobile Race Cup.
Luxury problem
With the lack of motorsport events in neighboring countries, the RRCV (Renn & Rallye Club Vorarlberg) as organizer was faced with the luxury problem of too many participants.
A whopping 315 participants from Austria, Germany, the Principality of Liechtenstein, South Tyrol and Switzerland had registered for the Arlberg Klein Slalom on the second weekend in July. Because only 190 were allowed to start, many had to be disappointed.
Many Swiss
As the nation with the most participants, Switzerland dominates the final standings with 19 riders among the top 30. With Beat Oertig, it also provides the overall winner, who will receive the largest trophy as well as prize money of 1500 euros (total 6000 euros).
Five races were scored - two each on the Arlberg and in Gargellen plus Röthis - minus a strike result. In the event of a tie, the better strike result counted first, followed by the higher number of starters in the class.
For once not in Bürki's shadow
Beat Oertig from Stehrenberg won all four mountain slaloms with his Peugeot 106 Maxi in Group H up to 1.6 liters. His only defeat was in Röthis.
Lotus V6 champion Dino Wintsch and Manuel Santonastaso also scored four "hundreds" each with four class wins on the mountain. However, both decided not to take part in the cross-border slalom at the end of July. Wintsch because of long-planned vacations, the Thurgau-based transport entrepreneur due to time constraints.
Marco Schöbel from Vorarlberg only came second in Saturday's Arlberg race with his production-based Ford Focus RS in Group F+3000 behind Fabian Rüegg from Hittnau on VW Golf R, as did Oertig behind Andy Külling from Trasadingen in a Peugeot 106 GTi in Röthis.
However, as a result of the strength of the class (10 competitors), this earned the Swiss eleven thousandths of a point more than the 2018 champion (7 competitors), so that the overall victory goes to him.
No less than nine Swiss, most of whom are also known from national hill climbs and slaloms, placed in the top 12. Here the overall and class ranking with statistics of the number of participants and the palmarès since 1980.
Planning underway for 2021
The same events are planned for next year. Which ones can finally be carried out is just - as in the exceptional year that is coming to an end - not primarily in the hands of the RRCV.
