Mercedes-Benz: This is how the EQV drives 🎥
FIRST TEST As the all-electric counterpart to the V-Class, the Mercedes-Benz EQV is humming into Switzerland. The brand already had an all-electric small series with the Vito E-Cell. The EQV sets itself stylistically apart from the V-Class with frugal visual adaptations.
The first recognizable visual difference is the front of the EQV, which is framed by a black surface and thus resembles the EQC SUV.
The classically elegant interior adopted from the V-Class can be upgraded with an optional design package: it features rose gold accents and a special blue-colored surface texture that is soft to the touch and has a metallic sheen.
Passenger car instrumentation
The driver and front passenger sit upright as if in a van, but the instrumentation and controls are taken from passenger cars: The instruments in front of the driver still have a partially analog tube look, while the central screen is touch-sensitive.
On the positive side, the lane departure warning system can be switched off. More details in the gallery.
Space for up to eight people and luggage
The spaciousness of the EQV, which is also available in a version that is 22 centimeters longer, is enormous. Visually and haptically, the interior meets luxury-class standards, and that applies to all rows of seats. The seats are comfortable and offer sufficient lateral support.
It has room for up to eight people in numerous configurations of the seats and a luggage compartment that is as large as it is flexible, with a volume of up to 1410 liters.
Full torque immediately after startup
A conventional turn of the key puts the front-mounted 204 hp electric motor into operating mode. The full torque of 362 Nm is available practically from the start. That is enough to get the van weighing more than 2.7 tons moving without any problems.
Front-wheel drive only - all-wheel drive is not planned
The almost silent acceleration lets the EQV move quickly at city speeds. Even on country roads, overtaking maneuvers are carried out smoothly and without much advance planning.
However, propulsion stops at 140 km/h - unless you order the increased maximum speed of 160 km/h from the factory. As soon as the speedometer needle passes the 120 km/h mark, the EQV only slowly approaches its top speed.
Consequently, Daimler only offers the EQV with front-wheel drive; there is no all-wheel drive variant.
One-pedal driving with strong braking effect
The degree of recuperation of the e-drive is controlled automatically via assistance systems, cameras and navigation data, but can also be regulated manually in four stages, and so everything is possible from gentle rolling to one-pedal driving with a strong braking effect when the accelerator is released.
The character of the drive can be regulated in several stages from sporty to efficient, and the range is up to 418 kilometers. Even with a sharp driving style with fast stages on the highway, 250 kilometers are still possible. And since it can be recharged with up to 110 kW, the time lost due to charging stops is kept within limits.
Smooth electric power steering
We drove the EQV with the optional three-stage adjustable air suspension. It is designed with comfort in mind and parries bumps confidently. The electric power steering is smooth, but somewhat indirect.
You have to get used to the pedal feel of the brake: Sometimes the foot sinks deep into the brake, sometimes the pedal hardens quickly. The transition from recuperation to hydraulic braking is a challenge for all electric and hybrid vehicles.
Advantages are range and charging systems
But anyone who opts for an electric van knows what they are getting into. Among them, the Mercedes-Benz EQV is the most convincing offering for the time being, and with its long range and the charging systems offered by Daimler, it is probably also the most suitable for everyday use.
Prices start at 75 160 francs,.
