There are no starting opportunities for modern race cars on the mountain in Switzerland this year. In the immediate vicinity, however, the Turckheim-Trois Epis hill climb, which is being held for the 64th time, will take place on September 5/6.

Legendary Swiss day winners
The 5950-meter mountain race track near Colmar in Alsace has always attracted Swiss drivers - this year probably even more than usual. From 1956 to 2003, Turckheim-Trois Epis was part of the European Hillclimb Championship without interruption.

The legendary Heini Walter from Aesch BL celebrated six stage victories in the 1950s and 1960s. The last Swiss overall winner was Xavier Perrot in 1971 on March F2. Since then, there have been several class and group winners from the southeastern neighboring country.

Exceptions for foreigners
Since the French have their own vehicle classification, foreign participants are rather rare, unless a separate classification is announced for them. A good example is the Abreschviller hill climb, where Joël Volluz and Ronnie Bratschi led this separate classification in 2019, or Vuillafans-Echavans with a Swiss IS class.

For this year's race in Turckheim, however, many requests apparently came from different countries. After first sounding out the interest of their compatriots before deciding to hold it, the Alsatians are now opening it up to other licensees, categories and vehicle types.

5 Nations Trophy
For them, the "Trophée des 5 Nations" will be announced, i.e. a kind of international competition for drivers from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Switzerland. As at the French season opener in Mont Dore, there will be two self-contained mountain races on Saturday and Sunday, each consisting of a practice run in the morning and two race runs in the afternoon.

The foreigners, whose maximum number of participants is limited to 40, will take their turn after the VHC vehicles (historic classes). As with the French, the faster of two running times counts for the classification.

Marcel Steiner tested the LobArt with the new Honda turbo engine from tuner Helftec in Bresse. The first test run under racing conditions on the mountain will take place soon.

Turbo premiere by Marcel Steiner
It is already certain that Marcel Steiner will fly the Swiss flag high. For the five-time mountain champion, this will be the premiere with the newly motorized and dressed LobArt Honda turbo. At the test day this week in Bresse problems arose in the engine environment, but these can be solved before the departure to Alsace.

Philip Egli and Marcel Maurer, who have already competed in mountain slaloms in Vorarlberg, are also expressing their interest. We will then go into the eagerly awaited list of participants in another message in the previous week.

Encouragingly, as things stand, spectators are also permitted, provided they adhere to strict measures to prevent corona infection.

The teaser for the upcoming Turckheim-Trois Epis hillclimb race could also whet the appetite of Swiss fans.
