AutoScout24 wanted to know whether the Corona pandemic had changed the needs of people in Switzerland with regard to car purchases. The result of the study: car purchases are still planned despite Corona. However, some are postponing the plan or would rather lease than buy.
Purchase of a car this year
Because of the crisis, one in seven people postponed their plans until later. The most common reasons cited for this are the changed financial situation and the current uncertain professional future. Covid-19 has increased the desire to own a car.
More time for planning a purchase
The intention to buy a car only arose since the Corona crisis, as eight percent of those willing to buy stated. The reason: they want to avoid public transport and contact with other passengers in the future. In addition, they had more time to plan a car purchase during the lockdown.
Managing Director Pierre-Alain Regali: "These statements are also reflected in AutoScout24's figures. People seem to have thought about buying during the lockdown and are now becoming active again with specific searches and purchases."
Most want to buy and not lease
The study also shows that the vast majority do not want to change the planned method of financing: a good twice as many people want to buy a car rather than lease it. Nevertheless, some have changed their minds during the Corona pandemic: Around one in ten people originally wanted to buy, but now opt for leasing.
Demand for financing a car
The fact that the Swiss population is not letting itself be deprived of the joy of owning its own car is also shown by the "exploding demand for car financing," according to Comparis. Although credit inquiries for car financing fell by 48 percent in March during the lockdown, with the increasing easing from the end of April, inquiries increased by 21.4 percent on a weekly average - and significantly exceeded the previous year.
According to figures from Comparis partner service Credaris, the peak was reached in the first week of June, with an increase of over 36 percent compared to the last week before the lockdown.
