Drifter Yves Meyer combined the premiere of the film about the 2019 racing season in front of invited guests at the IMAX Theater in Lucerne with the announcement of his new project. After two years in the Drift Kings of Europe, he is drawn to the United States of America.
Yves Meyer: "Formula Drift is practically the Champions League for drifters. With our partners Lattesso and Nexen, we have found an opportunity to race there. That's why we're taking this opportunity."
More popular than in Europe
The races take place on speedways, circuits and even city circuits, such as the season opener in the middle of Long Beach. Unlike in Europe, the drifting events are watched by tens of thousands of spectators on site and more than a million viewers on livestream. In Europe, recordings of the Formula Drift Championship races can be seen on the pay-TV station Motorvision TV.
There are practically only professionals from all over the world at the start. Although Yves Meyer came second in the 2018 FIA Intercontinental Cup in Japan, he will not yet be a permanent fixture in Formula Drift. But the Lucerne resident, who lives in Schwyz, wants to put an exclamation mark or two on the competition.
Yves Meyer: "2020 will be an apprenticeship year for us. I want to prove myself in one or two qualiruns, but it will be tough for the battles. The goal is to become the best among around 20 expected rookies."
While Meyer will contest the entire season in the premier Pro class with the BMW F22 Eurofighter optimized at Helftec, Joshua Reynolds will compete in four events in the Pro 2 category with the second BMW. Mainly Meyer's compagnon from Event Seelisberg will take part in the Japanese drift series with the Toyota GT86.
