This weekend, eleven drivers will still be battling for the prestigious and lucrative overall victory in the Pirelli Junior classification at the finale of the 2019 ADAC GT Masters at the Sachsenring. Drivers under the age of 25 with a bronze or silver classification are eligible to score points. The front runner is 19-year-old Ricardo Feller from Aargau, the youngest in the field.
The winner can not only look forward to 22 sets of slicks from tire partner Pirelli, victory in the junior drivers' classification was recently also a stepping stone to a factory contract. The junior champions of the past three years - Connor De Phillippi, Jules Gounon and Sheldon van der Linde - were all signed up by manufacturers following their successes in the ADAC GT Masters.
Finally a new team partner
Feller has already celebrated a race win together with Audi factory driver Dries Vanthoor from Belgium, who is two years his senior, and is in third place overall with him. Of course, the Swiss wants to maintain this position as well.
The talented Swiss will tackle the decisive finale with a new teammate because Vanthoor is needed in the Blancpain Endurance Cup at Barcelona. His place in the Audi R8 LMS fielded by Land Motorsport will be taken by compatriot Frédéric Vervisch. For the third year in a row, the youngest driver in the field has 192 points, eleven more than his Austrian teammate Max Hofer (20).
Ricardo Feller: "It's great for our team that we are leading the Pirelli Junior classification with two drivers. Of course, both Max and I want the title. We are good friends off the track, but competitors on it. I'm going to give everything I've got to win the title."
Of all the drivers in the leading group, Feller has the most experience in the ADAC GT Masters at the Sachsenring. He wants to benefit from this.
Ricardo Feller: "I like the track. Since you can hardly test there, I might have an advantage over the drivers who are competing there for the first or second time."
Schmidt hopes for a conciliatory end to the season
The other nine drivers who can mathematically intervene in the title fight include Jeffrey Schmidt from Liestal in an Audi R8 from BWT Mücke Motorsport. However, with a 41-point gap to Feller, his chances are slim and depend on the bad luck of his junior rivals in front. Schmidt has only managed a single podium so far in a mixed season (3rd place at the opening race in Oschersleben) and, in contrast to Feller (3), has only been at the top once as winner of the Junior classification.
Sachsenring instead of Hockenheim
For the first time in the history of the "League of Super Sports Cars", the season finale will not take place at Hockenheim but at the Sachsenring. SPORT1 will broadcast both races live and in full. Both rounds will start at 2:45 p.m. this time. In addition, the races are available online in livestream on sport1.de, adac.de/motorsport and youtube.com/adac to see.
