Basically, the Marco Polo remains a mid-wheelbase V-Class converted into a camper by specialist Westfalia. With electrically operated elevating roof and convertible seats, up to four people can find a berth. The Marco Polo starts at a good 65,000 francs with a sophisticated practical kitchenette. About 6000 francs less it costs in the version "Horizon", which is mainly offered without kitchen block. The buyer has the choice ...
Additional insulation dampens noise
The most important change is the powertrain with the new diesel engine family. The 2.0-liter produces 163, 190 and 239 hp and is combined with a 9-speed automatic and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. Mercedes assumes that Swiss people will only afford the best in the Marco Polo and will especially order the top engine 300d AWD starting at 76,220 Swiss francs.
This accelerates in 8.6 seconds, reaches 214 km/h and consumes a restrained 7.1 liters of diesel.
Thanks to the two additional gear steps, the engine runs at lower speeds and more quietly.
Additional insulation dampens noise, and improved bearing blocks decouple the powertrain and chassis more strongly from the body. As a result, the Marco appears much more comfortable.
Fits in any normal parking
But it has also become noticeably zippier, which is why you can travel quite nimbly in the 5.14-meter-long motorhome. The Marco Polo remains under two meters high, so it fits into any normal parking space.
Compared to the V-Class, delivery of the Marco Polo takes three months longer. The reason: Westfalia first has to wait for the finished minivan before it can convert it into a camper.
