Car theft: how to protect yourself?

You HAVE TO WATCH OUT for Jaguar Land Rover, which makes it difficult for car thieves. This is the conclusion reached by ADAC and its Austrian counterpart ÖAMTC in a test of current models from various brands. Car theft
Land Rover makes life difficult for even clever car thieves with the Discovery thanks to a special system.

The two automobile clubs tested the security of the keyless entry system Keyless-Go in 273 current car models. Only four models could not be cracked - and all of them come from Great Britain: Jaguar E-Pace, Jaguar I-Pace, Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover.

Security technology with computer chips
This quartet, like other vehicles from the Jaguar Land Rover family, has security technology in the form of computer chips with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. The car thieves' range extenders are powerless against this.

10 tips against car theft from TCS
If you don't have a system like Jaguar Land Rover's in your car, be sure to follow this advice from the experts at TCS.

  1. Remove the ignition key even when refueling. This is the only way to activate the immobilizer.
  2. When you arrive at your vacation destination, empty the vehicle as quickly as possible to avoid arousing thieves' desires.
  3. Do not leave valuables, cameras, computers, cell phones, important documents and spare keys in the car.
  4. Always check again manually whether the vehicle is actually locked. Criminals often use jammers to block the GSM signal of a radio remote control.
  5. Make sure that windows, sunroofs and fuel filler caps are also closed. There are also gasoline thieves.
  6. Do not park the car in backyards, unsecured carports, or on lightly traveled roads at night or during trips.
  7. If possible, park your vehicle only in lockable garages or in parking lots with video surveillance or a guard.
  8. Do not park your car in front of restaurants or in hotels, nor leave keys with hotel porters or parking attendants. Risk of being copied.
  9. Do not carry the car key on your buttocks, outside or in open handbags. Never put the key on the table in a restaurant or bar.
  10. Deposit the car key in the safe in the hotel room. Even in vacation apartments, it should not be left lying around openly, otherwise the car will also be gone in the event of a break-in.
