Volvo Cars and POC develop world-first car-bike helmet crash test

The cyclist detection system is designed to indicate an impending collision and initiate emergency braking if necessary. The research project by Volvo and the scientific forum of the protective helmet brand POC includes various crash tests developed in-house at the Volvo Safety Center. They are part of more extensive research into injuries and their long-term consequences for cyclists.

Comparison between carrying and not carrying
During these tests, crash test dummies wear velo helmets from the Swedish sports brand: Mounted on a test stand, they hit different areas of a Volvo hood at different speeds and angles.
The tests are based on existing legal test procedures for head protection. In this way, Volvo Cars and POC can draw a comparison between wearing and not wearing a helmet.

Influence on future vehicle developments
In existing test procedures, helmets are only dropped from various heights onto a flat or angled surface - bike-meets-vehicle accidents are not taken into account there. Volvo Cars and POC want to further refine and advance such tests. At the same time, the tests also provide valuable insights for Volvo that will be incorporated into future vehicle developments.
