Giorgio Maggi continues to do well in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES). After stunning everyone with victory at his debut in Valencia, the 21-year-old from Nidwalden delivered another flawless performance in the first of the two Elite2 rounds at the Franciacorta circuit in Italy. After a spirited race, he brought the 400-hp Ford Mustang of the Dutch team Hendriks to the finish line in third position.
Here the driver decides and not only the technology
The NWES is the European offshoot of the famous NASCAR Series from the USA. It is contested using standardized stock cars with tube-frame chassis and 5.7-liter V8 engines (approx. 400 hp). These differ only in silhouette, which is either the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang. There are no electronic aids like ABS and ESP or a BoP. A 4-speed gearbox is shifted by hand. So in terms of material, there is absolute equality of opportunity.
Giorgio Maggi: "It's a pretty tough fight in our races - you don't have any breathers. From start to finish you have to be totally fit, as you have no technical aids in the race car. I love that fight!"
Highlights of the first two races of Elite1 (where Dutchman Loris Hezemans drives the Hendriks car) and Elite 2 (Maggi with ##50 in a duel) at the NASCAR GP Italy can be seen in the following 2-minute video:
Podium missed after small driving mistake
In the second race of the Elite2, Giorgio Maggi was also permanently fighting for victory. With four laps to go, he got too far out in the first corner after the start/finish, which the competition exploited mercilessly. As a result, he narrowly missed another podium in fourth place.
Giorgio Maggi: "At the end my tires degraded rapidly and so I made this small mistake behind start/finish. Nevertheless, I was very satisfied with my two races. The fact that I'm now leading the championship makes me very proud."
Pretty much at the beginning of the short summary of Sunday's two races you can see Maggi's crucial driving mistake:
See you at Brands Hatch!
Good conditions, then, for the next race weekend at Brands Hatch on June 1-2. As the British are particularly fond of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, more than 80,000 spectators are expected, as in 2018.
