The 66-year-old T1 is the first radar speed camera of this type to be in use.
Until then, speeding offences were still determined using stopwatches. Just in time for the anniversary, Volkswagen is including this rare Bulli in its commercial vehicle vintage collection in Hanover.
Flash unit was located in the rear
The vehicle stood largely unattended in barns and garages for over 54 years. The 25-horsepower 1953 Bulli has 65,144 kilometers on the clock and cost 6750 German marks at the time. It was acquired by the Police Procurement Office of Lower Saxony. After it was used by the Hanover police, police officers were trained to use it for mobile radar measurements from 1961 to 1964. Employees of the "Training Center for Technology and Traffic" installed a flash unit in the rear of the blue vehicle. The radar unit itself was housed in the interior. There, officers at a small desk evaluated the data obtained.
No problems despite years of service
In 1964, the police deregistered the Bulli and it became private property. Due to a lack of time, a planned restoration never took place, and so the vehicle ended up at Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge Oldtimer. After the installation of a new starter battery and an engine oil change, the engine started up again immediately despite its decades of idle time.
