There were only twelve drivers at the start. But they put up a great fight for victory at the premiere of the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy. Staged by Jaguar Racing, this is the first brand trophy with electric touring cars.
Start-finish victory for the Team Asia New Zealand
Victory went to New Zealander Simon Evans, who started from pole position. Due to heavy rainfall on Saturday morning, qualifying was cancelled. So the lap times from free practice counted for the starting grid.
Evans led the race for 23 minutes plus one lap from start to finish. Bryan Sellers was close on his heels, but the American was beaten by Brazilian Sergio Jimenez on the penultimate lap. Fourth place went to the popular touring car driver in Brazil, Cacá Bueno, in the second Jaguar Brazil Racing car.
Double premiere
Among the twelve participants were Katherine Legge, Célia Martin and Alice Powell. They were also the only ones from Europe. Never before had women been allowed to compete against men in a race in the Arab state.
And they did a respectable job. VIP guest driver Alice Powell came fifth in the Pro-Am category. The Brit left Pro(fi) driver Katherine Legge one position and five class rivals behind her.
Legge is well known from IndyCar and the IMSA Sports Car Championship. She turned the fastest race lap. With Sellers, Legge drives for the popular U.S. team Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Frenchwoman Célia Martin, who competes for the German Jaguar team, finished eleventh.
In addition, two Saudi Arabian drivers from Saudi Racing, two from Team China and a Canadian from TWR Techeetah were on the grid.
Bern is not planned
A drop of bitterness for Swiss Jaguar fans: The I-Pace eTrophy will not be held at the Swiss E-Prix in Bern, of all places, unless Jaguar Racing adjusts its schedule. The electric felines will also be absent from the next Formula E race in Morocco on January 12, 2019.
