Historical: Everything about Swiss F1 drivers

OPUS IN TWO BANDS Much has been written about Swiss drivers in Formula 1. But never before so meticulously and richly illustrated. Volumes 1 and 2 of "The Swiss Drivers in F1" leave no questions unanswered. 24 drivers with Swiss nationality, including dual citizens, have stood at least [...] since the beginning of the Formula One World Championship in 1950.

Véronique de Sybourg-Siffert and Philippe Siffert are delighted with the book that has just been published, which focuses on their father who died in an accident in 1971 (Photos: Jürg Kaufmann).

24 drivers with Swiss nationality, including dual citizens, have been on the grid of a Grands Prix at least once since the Formula One World Championship began in 1950. 20 more have come into contact with Formula 1 in other ways. And a number of personalities have been involved with the premier class of motor racing in a variety of capacities.

Two volumes, three languages
Authors Jean-Marie Wyder and Mario Luini have immortalized them all in their two-volume, trilingual monumental work "The Swiss Drivers in F1" (German, French and Italian). The first volume with Jo Siffert on the cover was published in December, followed in March by the second part with Clay Regazzoni on the cover.

The two authors: In years of work, Jean-Marie Wyder and Mario Luini have compiled information and photos on all Swiss F1 drivers.

Of course, the focus is on the only two Swiss GP winners to date. But there is also due space dedicated to all the other riders.

The two books live from the many photographs, 620 per volume, 80 percent of which have never been published. For each driver there is a richly illustrated and described career history and the complete statistics.

Foreword and career history of Marc Surer
Following Jo Siffert, more than 80 of the 432 pages in the first volume are devoted to Marc Surer from Basel and his sometimes tragic career. Surer has also written a foreword.

Also covered are Maurice Caillet, Max De Terra, Rudolf Fischer, Gregor Foitek, Franco Forini, Peter Hirt, Loris Kessel, Michael May, Silvio Moser, Herbert Müller, Xavier Perrot, Albert Scherrer and Heinz Schiller. The remaining Swiss F1 drivers will follow in the second volume.

Michael May (84) with two pages from the chapter devoted to his career. Born in Stuttgart, he subsequently made a name for himself as an inventor in the technical field.

There was and is not only the GP Bern and the Sauber F1 Team...
The first volume opens with a relatively short review of the Swiss Formula 1 races, of which there were also those in Geneva, Lausanne and Erlen in addition to Bern.

After that, reference is made to the Swiss Formula 1 teams, starting with Sauber and extending to the smaller Ecuries, which hardly ever make a big appearance. Officials, technicians, team members and personalities working for partner companies of Formula 1 are also presented.

Appetizers on the homepage
Even those who believe that they already know and have seen everything will find what they are looking for in this book. The enormous effort therefore justifies the price of 169 francs per volume plus postage and shipping.

The easiest way to order the book "The Swiss Drivers in F1" is via the specially set up homepage. There you can also discover excerpts from some chapters.

The danger that you want to know everything afterwards and order by mouse click is of course great - but pure intention...
