Motorsport: Calamia in the new GT4 Maserati

Two years ago, Mauro Calamia captured the European and World Series titles of the Maserati Gran Turismo MC Trofeo in impressive fashion. After the project with a GT3 Maserati failed the previous year, the 24-year-old from Laupen ZH contested the Italian GT Championship with a Porsche together with Joël Camathias from Ticino. New challenge: Mauro Calamia is relaxed about the start of the season in the GT4 European series.

Now Mauro Calamia is returning to the Swiss Team and its house brand. The Ticino-based team has developed a GT4 version of the Maserati Gran Turismo for the GT4 European Series. The team from Balerna uses a car itself, which Mauro Calamia will share with an Italian. Other teams do this on their own, but source certain parts from the southern Swiss. Because of this experience advantage and his successes in 2014, Mauro Calamia reckons he has a legitimate chance. "Of course the title is my goal," he says frankly. "The only thing I don't know yet is how we compare to the competition."

Cédric Freiburghaus in the KTM X Bow GT4
As in GT3, equality of opportunity is sought via the so-called Balance of Performance, which can mean various restrictions in the technical area. However, Mauro Calamia is not too worried ahead of next weekend's season opener in Monza (as part of the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup): "We've already tested out the worst-case scenario, and even so the car works quite well." One of his opponents will be Cédric Freiburghaus on a KTM X Bow GT4. He won the rookie classification of the KTM X Bow Challenge last year.
