The newly launched Sauber Junior Team will compete in FIA Formula 2, FIA Formula 3, ADAC Formula 4 and Italian Formula 4 from next season. The partner for this project is Team Charouz Racing System from the Czech Republic.
The Sauber Junior Team is to benefit from technical, commercial and sporting support from the Hinwil plant. The first tests will already take place in Abu Dhabi at the end of November.
Platform for talented drivers
With the Junior Team, Sauber Motorsport is expanding its commitment to motorsport, offering a comprehensive platform that allows talented drivers to race in the junior categories in a highly professional environment. The aim is to take them step by step to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Charouz Racing System from Prague, founded in 1985, is one of the best-known teams in formula racing series. Team owner is former touring car driver Antonín Charouz.
Close to Ferrari
The Czechs only extended their commitment to Formula 2 and Formula 4 for 2018. The most recent successes are the Formula 2 team's double victory in Monaco with Italian Antonio Fuoco and Louis Delétraz from Geneva and the title win in ADAC Formula 4.
Charouz is also very close to Scuderia Ferrari and takes on drivers from the Italian's junior squad. Now this relationship has come full circle with Maranello's Formula 1 partner Sauber. So it's quite possible that Sauber test driver Tatiana Calderon will be driving for the Sauber Junior Team in Formula 2 or Formula 3 in 2019.
A long tradition
For the CEO of Sauber Motorsport and Team Principal of the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team, this represents a further and important step in the company's development, he is quoted as saying in the Sauber Motorsport statement.
Frédéric Vasseur: "Racing is an essential part of Sauber Motorspor's DNA. It has a long tradition of helping young drivers - such as Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc to date - to reach their full potential. With this project, Sauber is expanding its platform from the junior categories to Formula 1. We are very pleased to partner with Charouz Racing System - a highly professional team successfully represented in all series."
As co-owner of ART Grand Prix, Frédéric Vasseur has already had the best experience (and also cash) with such projects. With the Sauber Junior Team and Charouz Racing Systems respectively, the Frenchman now rivals his own teams...
