IKSM finals: Wintsch wins as desired

SLALOM WANGEN As in 2017, the final race of the Intercantonal Slalom Championship ended with the day's victory for Dino Wintsch on Lotus. The traditional final round of the ICSM 2018 at the Franzrüti airfield in Wangen SZ, organized by Squadra Mosquito, marked the end of the 2018 Swiss motor racing season. The cold and at times damp weather was not very inviting. Nevertheless, most participants and spectators had their fun.

Although the course, which is only about one kilometer long and has 34 gates on the small airfield runway, cannot be set out smoothly, the fastest drivers in terms of paper form and material dominated. Above all, last year's winner Dino Wintsch with his Lotus Exige 430 Cup.

Everything on one card
Although the athlete from Zurich touched a pylon in the first run and received a ten-second time penalty, he by no means had a safe run in the second run on a partly damp surface.

The reason was the time of 55.25 seconds set by Reto Steiner in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo with pre-warmed slicks (double start with Danny Krieg).

Dino Wintsch: "I wanted to repeat last year's victory. That's why I put all my eggs in one basket and attacked. Despite many slides, I then achieved a time of 54.42 and thus had the day's victory."

For the pacesetter from the Lotus V6 Cup Suisse (overall winner 2018 in the Open class), this was the crowning conclusion of a successful season. This included the day victories in the LOC slaloms of Chamblon, Ybrig and Ambri in the ICPM.

Hansueli Zahnd achieved ten L1 class wins with the Peugeot 208 GTi in the past season. Not all races counted towards the ICSM. The picture shows him at the Chamblon slalom (photo: Peter Wyss).

Title to a Bürki protégé
The 2018 IKSM title was secured by Hansueli Zahnd in a Peugeot 208 GTi. Although the Bernese had to admit defeat by 14 hundredths to Jürg Jucker in the new Suzuki Swift in Wangen in the L1 class over 2000 to 3000 cc, the number of points was enough to win the title.

Zahnd drives for MB Motorsport, whose team boss Martin Bürki won the Swiss championship. So the success is no coincidence.

Hansueli Zahnd: "It was a brilliant season for me and MB Motorsport. I won ten out of twelve races, and I was also second twice. The fight with the Suzuki riders was fun. A nice experience was the weekend in Drognens, where I won the L1 class on Saturday and the national SuperSeries on Sunday."

Technical worries at the defending champion
Defending champion Noa Schmid complained of several technical problems over the year after he had strengthened his Subaru BRZ with a turbocharger.

On the angular course in Wangen, he was at a loss against the best all-wheel-drive vehicles with the front-heavy car and rain tires. So he had to settle for an unaccustomed third place.

Noa Schmid: "In the first two gears, it's difficult to get the power to the ground. In retrospect, I would have been better off not installing the turbo last winter. But I just wanted to know how much you can still get out of this car."

It couldn't be closer. Noa Schmid doesn't give away a single centimeter. In Wangen, he was still without a chance against the best four-wheelers (Photo: Ramon Hänggi).

His successes in the L2 over three liters in Frauenfeld, Interlaken, Seewen (day winner, but too few direct opponents in the class), Chamblon and Anneau du Rhin were only enough for third overall IKSM rank behind Zahnd and Wintsch after the retirement in Ambri (gearbox damage).
