Eleven teams involved in the upcoming 2018/19 FIA Formula E Championship took part in three days of testing at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. They were able to get an initial assessment of their new Gen2 racing cars.
One of the two BMW i Andretti Motorsport drivers was fastest on all three test days. While it did not rain during any of the Formula E races, the last day of testing on Friday was held in the rain.
Portuguese driver António Félix da Costa set the fastest time on Wednesday, the second day of testing. Second fastest was defending champion Jean-Eric Vergne in the DS Techeetah car.
Formula E newcomer Alexander Sims achieved the third-best time in a BMW. In collaboration with Andretti Motorsport from the USA, the Munich-based team is running as a works team for the first time in the fifth season.
The two Swiss in a good midfield position
Sébastien Buemi set the sixth-best time in the field of 24 drivers with the Nissan e.dams car. Edoardo Mortara finished ninth in the new Venturi.
Buemi briefly summarizes his test work in the following video:
New race format
All teams also simulated the new race format, which now does not require a mid-race car change. Instead, there will be an attack mode and so-called activation zones in future. If the driver passes through this zone on the track, the performance of his car increases briefly.
What the new second-generation electric racing car sounds and feels like from the driver's perspective is shown by a lap on board Robin Frijns in the Virgin Racing car.
