Historical body shape translated into the modern age: the new Porsche 935/78 as a reminder of the legendary Group 5 model.
The technology of the race car is based on the 911 GT2 RS high-performance sports car. As with the historical prototype, large parts of the body have been replaced or supplemented by add-on parts made of carbon fiber composite (CFRP). With its streamlined rear end, the 935 extends to a length of 4.87 meters with a width of 2.03 meters.
The spectacular aerodynamics are a completely new development and a tribute to the Porsche 935/78. With this GT car, developed in accordance with Group 5 regulations, Porsche won the then one-make World Championship and the Kremer customer team the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the German Racing Championship in 1979. The more extreme version with an elongated shape, massive extensions and the basic color white was called "Moby Dick" by fans.
Birthday gift to wealthy fans
The car was created on the occasion of 70 years of Porsche sports cars. It can be used at club sport events and racetrack training.
Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Head of Motorsport and GT Cars: "This spectacular car is Porsche Motorsport's birthday present to fans all over the world. Since the car is not homologated, engineers and designers did not have to follow the usual regulations and were accordingly able to develop freely."
Some historic Porsche sports cars were the inspiration
Many details of the exterior quote successful vehicles from the company's own motorsport history: While the aerodynamically clad rims are reminiscent of those of the 935/78, the LED taillights in the end plates of the rear wing are based on the LMP1 919 Hybrid racer.
The exterior mirrors come from the 911 RSR, and the exposed titanium exhaust tailpipes are modeled on the Porsche 908 from 1968. In the cockpit, too, some details are reminiscent of historic racing cars from Zuffenhausen.
700 hp with 1380 kilograms
The new 935 is powered by a state-of-the-art 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with biturbo charging. This is largely identical to the high-performance production unit of the street-legal 911 GT2 RS. Power output is 700 hp, and the total weight of the vehicle is 1380 kilograms.
Power is transmitted to the 310 millimeter wide rear wheels by means of a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) with rigid suspension. As in the GT road-going models of the 911, the driver operates the gear changes via paddles on the steering wheel.
The new Porsche 935 can be ordered now at a price of €701,948 plus country-specific VAT. Customers will receive their vehicles from June 2019 as part of exclusive delivery events.
