The sensational transfer is perfect. Charles Leclerc has signed a contract with Scuderia Ferrari after a successful Formula 1 apprenticeship with Sauber. The 20-year-old Monegasque was already the biggest talent from Ferrari's junior development program during his GP2 and Formula 2 days.
Lap record holder in Formula 1 history
Leclerc will take over from Kimi Räikkönen at the Italian team from 2019 - probably not entirely voluntarily. After all, the Finn recently shone in Monza with the absolute record lap in the history of formula racing.
With an average speed of 1'19.119 and 263.58 km/h, the Finn, who lives in Baar, secured pole position for the Italian GP, which he subsequently finished in second place behind world championship leader Lewis Hamilton.
Räikkönen thus proved that, at 38, he is not yet an old hand. Alfa Romeo Team Sauber agrees, signing him for the next and probably final two years of his career.
Räikkönen's impressive career began with the Swiss team in 2001 and culminated in winning the drivers' world championship with Ferrari in 2007.

Leclerc has a great future ahead of him
Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal of Alfa Romeo Sauber, therefore has one laughing and one crying eye. On the one hand, he has to hand over one of the greatest talents of the modern era after just one season. On the other hand, he is getting back a veteran who will undoubtedly help the team with his experience.
Frédéric Vasseur: "It was a great pleasure for us to support Charles Leclerc in his first year in Formula 1. We have continuously improved and will work hard until the end of this season to achieve the best possible results together. We are convinced that Charles has a great future ahead of him."
Räikkönen to take the team forward
According to statements from Alfa Romeo Sauber F1, the Frenchman is looking forward to the arrival of the 20-time GP winner, who has stood on the podium 100 times to date.
Frédéric Vasseur: "Kimi Räikkönen is an important part of our project and brings us one step closer to our goal of making progress as a team. His undisputed talent and many years of experience will promote the growth and development of the whole team and the car. Together, we will start the 2019 season with a strong foundation in which we will fight for results that count."
