Renault Cup: Cancer and the Laughing Third
UNIQUE WINNER Without two of his strongest opponents, Philipp Krebs won the Oberhallau hill climb in the Renault Classic Cup with ease. Denis Wolf, who had already been crowned champion, was invited by Nico Müller to attend the DTM race in Misano, and René Schnidrig had to cancel at short notice for professional reasons. As a result, Philipp Krebs found himself in the lone role of favorite at the third-to-last round of the Renault Classic Cup in Oberhallau.
There's no question that he lived up to it and was always on the safe side. His three 1:34 times were within 18 hundredths of a second. In the addition, Krebs then had a lead of 3.75 seconds.
However, the superior 2018 winner and runner-up admitted that he missed his main opponent.
Philipp Krebs: "Without Denis, a real fight is missing. But it was still fun. My personal best time here was already 1.3 seconds faster. But I left older tires on - I'll keep the newer ones for the Gurnigel..."
Hot three-way fight behind Krebs and Zbinden
Due to his routine and experience with a Clio, Stephan Zbinden was the logical second. He was already third with Wolf and Schnidrig as opponents, so the top placing is not undeserved.
The third place on the podium was open until the last finish. After the first run, it was occupied by Angelo Figus. Because his pursuers improved more than he did, the completely surprising Hans Sigrist took over this position after two runs.
Like Krebs, Sigrist drives an older and lighter Clio II, but like Figus he has never been so far ahead. The Rafz native did not necessarily blame his home advantage.
Close decision
But the results are only counted up at the end. With the fourth time in the second race run and the third best in the last race run, Pirmin Scheidegger hoisted himself into third place. His lead over Sigrist in the addition was one hundredth of a second!
Based on his progress so far, Marc Beyeler would actually have been predestined for third place. Small mistakes and a too large safety margin resulted in only fifth place with a little more than three and a half tenths behind the duo Scheidegger/Sigrist.
Angelo Figus finally had to settle for sixth place ahead of Dario Kasper, Meverick Gerber and his cousin Patrick Gerber.
Bernese fight on the Bernese mountain
At the Gurnigel, everyone will be in the game again. Although the 2018 Cup has been decided, the Bernese will fight to the teeth at their home race.
Between Wolf and Krebs it's all about victory and prestige, between Schnidrig, Zbinden and Beyeler about third place in the championship. That's how a one-make cup has to be.
