Race Inn: Helmet wins indoor race

NO 1 APRIL SCHERZ Instead of Easter eggs, 14 racers searched for the ideal line at the Race-Inn Roggwil on Sunday - not with karts, but with touring cars. After four years of interruption, the indoor race at the Race-Inn Roggwil was held again last year on the traditional April 1. Insiders knew beforehand that the announcement of this unique event was no joke.

Therefore, several hundred spectators gathered in the kart hall on Easter Sunday afternoon to drive the drivers selected for participation with their different touring cars.

After two practice and two heats of each driver over four laps each, it was time for the shootout of the ten fastest in the late evening. The timing took place over two laps with a standing start.

Day winner Andreas Helm faces first national season
The winner was Andreas Helm with his VW Polo G60 (nicknamed Blaue Wildsau) from Group E1. The 22-year-old from Otelfingen was already second last year, but otherwise has not yet made a big appearance nationally, as he has so far mainly driven in slaloms and hill climbs in Germany.

Andreas Helm: "I wasn't quite at the front in practice and pre-running because we had difficulties with the tires. We then tried different tire combinations, and so it went perfectly."

In the coming season, Andreas Helm plans to compete nationally in Switzerland for the first time (vehicle still unclear), while his brother Michael will start with a Formula 4 race car. Dad Erich Helm, who competed nationally for many years with his VW Polo, now leaves racing to his sons after the last start on Easter Saturday in Röthis.

A shining example of a top all-rounder: Classic Cup champion Denis Wolf missed out on the day's victory by only fractions of a second.

Three tenths of a second behind, Classic Cup champion Denis Wolf came in second in his 2018 Renault Clio RS III, now foiled in blue. Third place went to Samuel Weibel in a Honda Civic 1.6 VTi. With less torque and more weight, it was difficult with the Cup Clio against Helm's supercharged E1 Polo, Wolf judged. Therefore, he was also satisfied with second place.

The indoor car race will take place again in 2019, even if April 1 then falls on a Monday.
