To enable Piquet Jr to gain experience in the LMP1 car accordingly, the Brazilian will take part in both the WEC Prologue in March and the 6-hour races at Silverstone and Spa. "As the reigning Formula E champion, Nelson normally drives against Nico and Nick. With us, the three of them are now coming together and we are convinced that they will be strong teammates. Le Mans requires a high level of preparation and we are happy that Nelson will be at the prologue as well as the first two rounds of the World Endurance Championship. We're off in a couple of weeks and the whole team is already looking forward to the start of the season," said Bart Hayden, Rebellion Team Manager.
For Piquet Jr, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is "one of the greatest motorsport events in the world." "When I competed in the GT Aston Martin DBR9 in 2006, I loved it. So much so that it's been at the top of my bucket list ever since and I'm dying to go again. I can't wait to get in the car at Le Castellet at the end of the month to start preparing," said Piquet Jr.
The three drivers, Piquet Jr, Prost and Heidfeld, are known from Formula E, but also to some extent from Formula 1. Piquet Jr drove for Renault in Formula 1 in 2008 and 2009, while Heidfeld was a regular F1 driver from 2000 to 2011. In 2015, Piquet Jr became Formula E champion. He drives for NEXTEV TCR, Prost sits behind the wheel for Renault e.dams and Heidfeld competes for Mahindra Racing.
