In the future, self-driving e-cars with concentrated IT technology on board should relieve chronically congested and exhaust-polluted cities. With the "Snap" concept car, the Swiss think tank Rinspeed is showing how it could work: For the first time, the mobile vehicles can also be used in a sensible immobile way, because the chassis and superstructure go their own way.
No sheet metal standing around
This means that unused sheet metal - or unused "rolling stock" - is a thing of the past. Mobility visionary Frank M. Rinderknecht has banished all components that are susceptible to wear and tear, as well as all IT-related technology, to the fully automated chassis of the electric car, which he calls the "skateboard.
Superstructure separated
The superstructures go by the umbrella term "pod" and consist of durable modules. They are virtually free of mechanical wear and tear or IT-related aging. This is because most conventional IT components can no longer be updated after just a few years because the rapid development of software makes them obsolete. Yet the rest of the vehicle can remain on the road for the life of the car.
Life Stage Partner
While classic car manufacturers celebrate the "marriage" of body and chassis as the highlight of every factory tour, in the case of the "Snap" skateboards and pods are only connected for a short time, in a sense just life stage partners. Thus, a wide variety of superstructures - such as for driving, delivery or parcel services, or the weekend adventure trip with the whole family - use the chassis that is currently available.
Fit for the future?
„"Snap" - rarely has the name of a vehicle more aptly described a possible solution to a problem. Perhaps the concept car will help the entire industry to "click".
