IAA 2017: Steps toward autonomous driving
AUDI The new flagship A8, two concept cars for autonomous driving, the A4 Avant g-tron and two new R and RS models are the highlights at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Other production models round off the four rings' presence at the show. The new A8 is the first production car in the world to be designed for highly automated driving at Level 3 in accordance with international standards. On freeways and multi-lane highways with structural separation from the oncoming lane, the Audi AI Traffic Jam Pilot takes over the driving task in slow-moving traffic at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The new A8 is the first production model in the world to be designed for highly automated driving at Level 3 according to international standards.
Active congestion pilot
Once the driver has activated the Traffic Jam Pilot with the AIT button on the center console, he can take his foot off the gas pedal and his hands permanently off the steering wheel. In contrast to Level 2, the driver no longer has to constantly monitor the car and, according to the manufacturer, can devote himself to an activity supported by the onboard infotainment system, depending on the applicable national regulations. The driver must remain perceptive and be able to take over the driving task again himself when the system prompts him to do so.
Country-specific
The introduction of the Congestion Pilot requires specific adaptation and testing of the system for each individual country in addition to clarity about the legal framework. In addition, different approval procedures and their deadlines must be observed worldwide. For these reasons, Audi will bring the Congestion Pilot in the new A8 into series production step by step, depending on the legal situation in the respective country.
Concept cars with new technology
For fully automated driving at Level 4, the "SUV Coupé" study uses a next-generation system that provides information for the highway pilot, which takes over the driving task at speeds of up to 130 km/h and can change lanes automatically. Audi's second concept car for the IAA drives fully autonomously into the future. No more concentration on road traffic. Passengers can spend the time they gain elsewhere. In addition, the show car combines many new features in the areas of connectivity, communication and operation.
More premieres
With the A4 Avant g-tron and A5 Sportback g-tron, which can be ordered now, Audi is making an offer for climate-friendly and at the same time economical mobility. The 2.0 TFSI natural gas engine offers 125 kW/170 hp with 270 Nm max. torque. The range is 950 kilometers in total, up to 500 kilometers in gas-only mode (factory specifications). Audi Sport GmbH is also celebrating two world premieres at the IAA 2017. The fourth generation of the high-performance Avant continues the history of the first RS model, the RS 2 Avant. The Audi subsidiary is also presenting a limited special model with rear-wheel drive for the first time.
