Two digits set the tone
AUDI The performance designation for Audi models worldwide is being changed: the names for the model series (A1 to Q7) remain unchanged. Within the model families, however, combinations of two digits will replace the previously different type designations in the future. The new label reflects the specific drive power and applies to cars with combustion engines as well as e-tron models with hybrid and electric drives.
New by kilowatt
The reference value for the new type designations is the drive power of the respective model in kilowatts (kW). Audi divides its model range into performance levels - represented by two-digit number combinations. For example, the number combination "30" will in future be at the rear of those models that mobilize between 81 and 96 kW of power. "45" stands for the power range from 169 to 185 kW. The top of the Audi model range is the power class above 400 kW. This is represented by the number combination "70.
Engine technology
As before, the numbers are supplemented by the engine technology - i.e. TFSI, TDI, g-tron or e-tron. The pairs of digits for the performance designation each increase in the Audi range in increments of five and represent the hierarchy both within a model series and across the brand's entire range. According to the new nomenclature, the range will in future extend from the Audi Q2 30 TFSI with 85 kW to the Audi Q7 50 TDI with 200 kW.
Extra class
The sporty S and RS top models and the Audi R8 occupy a special position in the range. These retain their classic naming and thus refer to the top position in the model range.
Start in autumn
The new Audi A8 generation will kick off in fall 2017, with the 3.0 TDI with 210 kW and the 250 kW 3.0 TFSI of the two six-cylinder engines starting out as the Audi A8 50 TDI and Audi A8 55 TFSI respectively. The manufacturer will be converting the other model series in the current range by the model year change in summer 2018.
