Frédéric Vasseur acted quickly. "Hello Ferrari, we'd like to keep having your engines!"

That was quick - and not to be expected otherwise. Ferrari is stepping in after the premature termination of the never-before-started partnership with Honda. The Sauber F1 Team announced on Friday morning that it had signed a multi-year contract with the Scuderia as engine supplier.

The Italians will equip the Sauber F1 Team with the latest engine specification from 2018. In the current season, the team is using last year's Ferrari engines - at its own request. The collaboration with Ferrari began back in 1997 and has developed successfully over a total of 17 years.

Here is the statement from Frédéric Vasseur, who masterminded the deal as the new team principal and CEO of Sauber Motorsport:

"I am very pleased that we will continue to work with Scuderia Ferrari as an engine supplier in the coming years. The shared experience between the Sauber F1 Team and Ferrari forms a strong basis that allows us to act quickly and efficiently, also with regard to the development of the 2018 car. I am convinced that together we will achieve the results in the future that reflect the passion and determination of the Sauber F1 Team."

The Sauber race cars from Hinwil will continue to have Ferrari engines in their rear.

With aerodynamic modifications in Hungary
The hunt for points continues for the Sauber F1 Team this weekend in Hungary. The eleventh Formula 1 World Championship round at the Hungaroring is the last Grand Prix before the summer break. The season then continues in Spa from August 25 to 27 with the Belgian GP.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, both Sauber C36-Ferrari cars will be fitted with the first innovations of an aerodynamic upgrade. This consists of new bodywork and a new cooling system.

The aerodynamic upgrade will be complemented by a new underbody after the summer break.
