Three days full of innovations
The three-day Google I/O, which began on May 17 at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, is considered the largest and most important developer conference in the software industry worldwide. One of its topics is Android as a new system architecture for infotainment applications in cars. It is being developed by the Android Open Source Community and its several million members.
Technology carrier Q8
The technology carrier Audi Q8 sport concept, which Audi is presenting at Google I/O, already has Android on board. The new functions, including the Spotify streaming service, Google Play Music and Google Assistant, run in the large MMI touch display centered in the dashboard. In addition, information is visible directly in the driver's field of vision. The new services are fully integrated into Audi's brand-specific infotainment system for the first time.
Navigation as an extra solution
On the one hand, the usual Audi database from HERE continues to serve as the navigation map, but on the other hand, navigation via Google Maps is also available to the driver on request. A notification center for incoming messages and calls completes the new services in the show car. The seamless integration of Android offers great potential. With more than 1.4 billion active users, Android is by far the largest mobile software platform in the world. Advantages for customers include shorter update cycles, a significantly greater variety of services, and broad international availability.
